Back
We’re pleased to announce that Mr Ian Petrie has been appointed as St Michael’s Catholic High School’s new Headteacher. Mr Petrie has been a familiar face at St Michael’s Catholic High School for over two decades, bringing a wealth of experience and commitment to excellence in Catholic education - currently in his position as Deputy Headteacher.
Spending 22 years of his career at St Michaels overall, he’s also held a Deputy Headship position at St Ignatius College, Enfield for six years.
Mr Petrie said: “I’ve had wonderful opportunities to grow during my career, which have led me to return to St Michaels after just a short six-year period at St Ignatius College - I think it’s because there’s something truly special about this secondary school.
“It’s how we are so intertwined with our communities; the true collaboration between families and teaching teams with a deep commitment to success; and the inspiring young people that come through the school gates.”
Matthew Holt, St Michael’s Chair of Governors, said: “We are delighted to appoint Ian Petrie as the next Headteacher of St Michael’s Catholic High School following an extremely rigorous interview process. We know Ian well as an existing Deputy Headteacher and we are well aware of his talents and his contribution and commitment towards St Michael’s. I know that governors, staff, students and parents are thrilled to have Ian leading the school into a new and exciting phase from September.”
Pat Murden, Chief Executive Officer of the Diocese of Westminster Academy Trust, said: “Mr Petrie’s appointment is a fantastic outcome for St Michael’s. His long-standing commitment to the school, combined with the experience he gained during his time away, means he brings both continuity and fresh perspective. We are confident he will lead the school with ambition, care and a strong sense of purpose.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Conway for his leadership, helping to establish St Michael’s as one of the top performing schools in the area, with a host of accolades including an ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted.”
Mr Petrie will be taking-up the role from 1 September 2026. Working closely with Mr Ed Conway, the current Headteacher, during a handover period to ensure that the leadership can be transitioned seamlessly.
DoWAT were involved in the rigorous selection process, joined by the Governing Board of St Michael’s and the Diocese of Westminster, and received an array of highly experienced, talented individuals apply. Choosing the right person to help our young people and colleagues to flourish was imperative and challenging – thank you to everyone that took an interest in leading our secondary school.
