The Diocese of Westminster Academy Trust (DoWAT) and St. Mary's University have collaborated to develop a ground-breaking Initial Teacher Training (ITT) program.

This ITT program has been designed to cater to the growing demand for teachers by providing expert-led, school centred training designed by some of the most experienced teachers and leaders in the country.

Aspiring teachers will receive training that will equip them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and experiences to make a lifelong positive impact on their students. Trainees will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) and the Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), ensuring that they are thoroughly trained and fully equipped for a successful career in teaching.

Equipping teachers for lifelong impact

The main goal of this initiative is to address the demand for teachers who not only have teaching skills but who can also instil a passion for learning in their students, and truly make a difference to the lives of young people. By providing practical school placements and academic training from St. Mary's University, this program equips trainees with the tools they need to excel.

We’re proud that all of our schools have consistently achieved 'Good' or 'Outstanding' ratings by Ofsted, so our trainees can be assured they’re honing their skills within a supportive and successful learning environment for trainees and students alike.

The path to excellence

The training program is designed to provide a structured learning experience that combines classroom teaching with academic learning, nurturing trainees to gradually transition into full teaching roles in school placements under the guidance of experienced teachers and leadership teams. Trainees will be placed in contrasting schools across Hertfordshire and London, progressively building their confidence through hands-on experience under the guidance of experienced teachers and leadership teams. This ensures that trainees are not just well-prepared but also empowered to make a meaningful impact on student learning.

Trainees will be supported by highly skilled professionals from across our Trust. Leading mentors, such as Pat Murden, Charlie Anderson, and Ciara Nicholson, play a key role in fostering a culture of excellence within the teaching profession.
