The Douay Martyrs Catholic Secondary School recently got through to the Netball Borough Finals. The Year 7 Netball Team have shown sheer determination and persistence throughout training and games over the season, which has propelled them to become one of the best teams in the Borough. After winning every game in their group, they were then selected to go through to the semi-finals.
The semi-final was against St. Helens. The Douay team started strong with our defence marking tightly, turning over balls and putting enormous pressure on their opponents. After the first half, Douay were winning 6-4. The lead gave the girls great confidence and in the second half, St. Helens struggled to get the ball down to their shooting half. The end result being 10 – 4 to Douay.
The pressure was on! Douay then had to play against their toughest opponents yet.... Northwood College in the Borough Finals. Both teams fought it out, scoring after each other making it evenly matched. Every quarter saw either a Northwood or Douay lead by one. In the final quarter the game finished 11-11; officials gave an extra 2 minutes for a golden goal and unfortunately this wasn’t achieved by Douay. Northwood College took the victory in extra time. Even though the girls didn’t win the Borough League, this is amazing achievement for them and a great start to the team's secondary school life.
