Great War Debate at Churchill College, Cambridge

The Douay Martyrs Catholic Secondary School History Department recently took 15 students from Years11, 12 and 13 to a Great War Debate at Churchill College Cambridge.

We were treated to an excellent warm up activity by Dan Hill from The Western Front Association. He told us lots about ‘Tommies’ lives in the trenches and got the audience involved as several of the students were asked to come forward and demonstrate clothing, weapons and gas masks used.

The Debate itself was on State Control, hosted by Mark Urban of BBC Newsnight and the panel were Professor Alexander Watson (Goldsmiths), Colonel Richard Kemp and Professor Stephen Badsey (Wolverhampton).

It was a very lively debate and the audience were encouraged to put questions to the panel.

All the students agreed that it was a very interesting evening!
