The John Henry Newman School is a heavily over-subscribed 11-18 mixed Catholic comprehensive school in Stevenage, and is a member of the Diocese of Westminster Academy Trust. We serve the Catholic community across north Hertfordshire and as far south as Hatfield, with pupils from more than 25 different parishes. Since its foundation in 1987, the school has established a reputation for excellent educational standards combined with unique opportunities to prepare students for a rapidly changing world. Our recent examination results at GCSE have consistently placed us within the top 2% of non- selective state schools on key performance measures. At Sixth Form, we offer a broad and flexible curriculum with over 30 A Level and BTEC courses and achieve outstanding results with an average of 28% of pupils achieving the highest grades at A level. Typically, over 85% of students meet the conditions of entry of their first choice university.
We are a very distinctive living Christian community in which each child and young adult is known and loved for who they are. We want our students to enjoy their education – to be happy, safe and secure and to grow in God’s love so that when they leave the school, they are equipped to change the world and make it a better place. We are very clear that our ‘Mission’ is to create an environment in which children can discover who they are and what their role in this life is. In the words of our patron, the Blessed John Henry Newman, we believe that “God has created us to do Him some definite service”. With this in mind, we have continued to invest in our infrastructure to ensure an environment fit for learning, and much of our resources over recent years have been invested in upgrading and maintaining the fabric of our buildings. Our most recent redevelopment includes the completion of a £4 million new block, purpose built to support the creative arts and providing state of the art performance spaces, music teaching, rehearsal and recording facilities and additional teaching space. This has enabled us to redesign our existing interior space to create dedicated Sixth Form study areas and reading rooms with ICT facilities. We benefit from excellent sporting facilities, including a hockey/football astroturf, tennis courts, sports hall and 2 full size pitches, and we have a firm direction for our ongoing development programme, with plans for a and further expansion of our teaching spaces and Sixth Form facilities.
